This November, The Creative Tribe will showcase a forward-looking exhibition from Solomon Peabo. The self-taught digital artist/ photographer started his career two years ago, he says that his love for the camera and the streets define his work and give his life both purpose and direction.
Solomon Peabo’s work juxtaposes reality with surrealism to explore his dream of a better Africa. Through his work, the artist hopes to bring this dream to reality. Peabo’s street photography features heavily in his exhibition titled “Your Voice, Ma”. The streets inspire his work because, on the streets, he sees life, pain, suffering, hard work, and chaos. Peabo’s work brings forth the idea that being creative is the way to a better Africa, he creates his better Africa using photographs of now.
The artist uses digital art to create what is called Afro-Futuristic pieces. Afro-Futurism is a cultural aesthetic that explores the developing intersection of African culture with technology. The art form seeks to reclaim black identity through art and culture by providing a lens to view possible futures and alternate realities. This art form, though relatively unexplored in the Ugandan culture could not come at a better time. COVID 19, the global disaster it may be, has shown just how strong Africa can be and that its creatives must lead the way into a future that uplifts Black culture and society.
The Popup Galley is hosted in partnership with The Innovation Village (TIV) at their Jinja home located at Plot 5 Main St., Jinja. The Exhibition will open on the 5th of November at 4:00 pm and run through to 7th November. Entrance is free to all Creative Tribe & TIV members, visuals artists, and students. Anyone not in the aforementioned categories will pay 5,000/= only for entrance.
